Festival season has arrived and what a choice there is!

We’re always on the lookout for new music and arts festivals around the UK and have come across the Visit England things to do page, with their great event ideas. Admittedly it only covers England, so would mean a bit of travel for many, but we’re really impressed with the array of musical genres and beautiful locations that are included. We’ve picked out a few festivals in different regions and, as we do, we’ve also included a couple of our nifty gadget ideas, great for road trips and weekends away this summer.

Cambridge Folk Festival, Cambridge – 27th – 30th July 2017

We’ve always been meaning to get along to this icon of British music festivals, running at Cherry Hinton Hall since 1964, when a young Paul Simon was a late addition to the line up. The four day folk festival is on from 27th – 30th July and is known for its “unique atmosphere and an eclectic mix of music and wide definition of what might be considered folk. The best traditional folk artists from the UK and Ireland rub shoulders with cutting edge contemporary acts, the finest American country, blues and roots artists, acclaimed singer songwriters, famous names and world music stars”. Performers this year include Jake Bugg, Oysterband, Lau, Hayseed Dixie and Loudon Wainwright III and the setting is a beautiful country hall on the edge of the city.

Tramlines Festival, Sheffield – 21st – 23rd July 2017

Taking place across seventy venues and four main stages across the city, Visit England tells us “Tramlines Festival takes its name from Sheffield’s light rail system. The vast number of performances and breadth of musical offerings manage to cover a great deal of musical ground. Tracking big-name artists from genres including pop, hip hop, and rock, Tramlines also offers a series of ‘After Parties’ featuring DJs performing house and techno sets, rappers, electronica artists and others.” This year’s performers include The Libertines, Primal Scream, Metronomy, All Saints, Toots & Maytals and We Are Scientists, demonstrating the eclectic mix on offer at this vibrant city festival.

WOMAD Festival, Malmesbury, Wiltshire – 27th – 30th July 2017

WOMAD-3wisemonkeys-blog

The World of Music, Arts and Dance Festival is an alternative world music oasis that welcomes musicians, artists and performers from all over the globe to the rolling hills of the Wiltshire countryside. Set around a grade 1 listed building, Charlton Park House, two miles from Malmesbury and created by Peter Gabriel and others, it’s a weekend of celebration of world-class acts. An alternative music and therapy lover’s paradise, WOMAD also includes the World of Words programme, celebrating the spoken word with poetry slams, author chats, discussions, talks and interviews. Music performers this year include Eliza Carthy, !!! (chk chk chk), House Gospel Choir, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Roy Ayers, BURD and Benjamin Zephania,

We’re getting excited just thinking about the musical offerings out there on these possible weekends away. Here are our gadget picks for anyone who’s lucky enough to get to any weekend events this month and beyond.
