Portable TVs are now available in many different styles and sizes, but if you want to watch TV in your kitchen while you’re eating breakfast or washing up, you might want to consider the Sovos SVKTV15 portable TV.

As the name suggests, the Sovos SVKTV15 is one of many 15″ portable TVs available, but the good news for anyone with a small kitchen is that the Sovos SVKTV15 features a flip-down design. This means that it can be fixed, manually, to the underside of a kitchen cabinet or to a wall and folded away when not in use. In fact when closed, the Sovos SVKTV15 measures just 17.4″ x 10.7″ x 2.2″ and its total weight of 11lbs won’t place undue strain on your kitchen cabinets either. Unlike some other portable TVs, the Sovos SVKTV15 is capable of operating from a 12-volt power supply, as well as mains, so is suitable for use in caravans, boats or any other confined space where TV is required. The 15.6″ screen can actually be swivelled through 45°, left and right, to achieve maximum viewing potential.

From a technical point of view, the SVKTV15 is one of the best of today’s portable TVs, featuring “HD Ready” native resolution of 1,366 x 768 pixels, 500:1 contrast ratio and support for HDMI or “High Definition Multimedia Interface”. HDMI is the current, industry-wide, standard and allows the transmission of uncompressed digital video and audio via a single cable. Digital and analogue TV tuners are built in, as is a multi regional, upscaling DVD player. Other connectivity options include a slot for your Top Up TV viewing card, a USB (“Universal Serial Bus”) port, audio outputs and VGA input.

Standard DVD content has a native resolution of 640 x 480 pixels, but, as with some other combination portable TVs, the Sovos SVKTV15 has the ability to take a lower resolution image and “upscale” it, to fill the screen at its own native, resolution. This is not HD or “High Definition” in its strictest sense, but merely an approximation of it. Nevertheless this means that you can view existing standard DVDs at near HD levels. DVD media produced in different parts of the world has different region codes. The U.S. and Canada constitute “Region 1”, Europe, Japan and The Middle East constitute “Region 2” and so on. So, if you want to play back DVD media from other countries, you need a DVD player corresponding to that region, or a multi regional DVD player, such as that included in the Sovos SVKTV15.

The Sovos SVKTV15 also includes a slim, magnetic remote control which you can attach to, for example, the door of your refrigerator or indeed any other metallic surface so that it is always at hand. Another useful feature is an IR, or “Infra Red”, transmitter that is compatible with wireless headphones. This means that you can listen to the Sovos SVKTV15 at any time of the day or night without disturbing the other occupants of your home, caravan or boat and without the potential Health and Safety hazard of trailing wires in a confined space. Indeed, if space is at a premium, you should also be aware that a smaller, 10″ model, will be available from late November 2009, onwards. With all these features, it’s not difficult to see why the Sovos SVKTV15 is the first choice amongst portable TVs of its type in this country.
