You may not have come across the brand name Sovos as yet, but, in less than three years, the UK based manufacturer has established a favourable reputation for the build quality and technical excellence of its portable TVs and portable DVD players.

You may not be aware, for example, that the LCD (“Liquid Crystal Display”) panels used in portable TVs and portable DVD players are not all created equal. They are in fact graded A+, A, B and C for quality and, whilst the lower production costs associated with inferior quality panels are usually reflected by the price tag of the finished product, the lack of quality may also be evident in its performance. Lower quality panels are more susceptible to “dead” pixels, caused by transistor failure and cheaper portable TVs and portable DVD players may also employ older LCD designs, with inferior contrast ratios, viewing angles and so forth.

There are no such problems with Sovos portable TVs and portable DVD players, however. Every Sovos LCD panel is the latest design and rated A for quality by the manufacturer, so the images displayed are always clear and crisp. Furthermore, the Sovos brand, itself, may be relatively new to the market, but the research and development and design teams behind the brand have the experience of over a decade in designing high quality, portable products specifically for the UK market. Sovos products are therefore compliant, by design, with all UK and European standards and are also backed by a full 24-month guarantee and a dedicated support centre, in the unlikely event that problems should occur.

At the smaller end of the Sovos range, in terms of screen size, the Sovos SV085A is a portable TV/DVD player with a screen measuring 8.5″ diagonally, a controllable 16:9 aspect ratio and a native resolution of 480 x 234 pixels. The Sovos SV085A includes DVB-T (“Digital Video Broadcast – Terrestrial”), also known as “Freeview” and analogue TV tuners. The fact that it can operate from a 12-volt or 24-volt power supply; a rechargeable Li-Po (“Lithium Polymer”) battery pack, with a life of 2½ hours; or the mains power supply means that it is truly versatile. In fact its soft, rubberised finish and waterproof antenna make it eminently suitable for use in the home, the car or just about anywhere else.

Slightly larger and slightly less portable is the Sovos SVKTV10 which, as the name suggests, is a 10″ widescreen portable TV and portable DVD player with a native resolution of 1,024 x 600 pixels. Like its larger cousin, the Sovos SVKTV15, a 15.6″ model, the SVKTV10 employs a flip-down design so that it can be fixed to the underside of a kitchen cabinet, or mounted on a wall using a standard 75mm VESA fitting and, importantly, closed out of the way when not in use. The SVKTV15 also offers a true “HD Ready” native resolution of 1,366 x 768 pixels and supports the latest, industry standard, HDMI (“High Definition Multimedia Interface”).

The multi regional DVD player built into each of the Sovos portable TVs supports CD, VCD and SVCD, as well as DVD+/-R and DVD+/-RW. Multimedia formats such as JPEG, MP3, WMA, MPEG1-4 and DivX can also be played back.

  1. They are not that good i contacted them about doing an repair and they were not interested in the slightest paid nearly £500 for the flip down tv !!!

    1. That is such a shame. We really have found them to be a superior service centre and offer really great quality service & support.
However what you might find is that because it is so long since these models were manufactured by them they just don’t have the components any longer to be able to offer a repair. Unfortunately this is often the case when a model bcomes 3-4+ years old.
